Reader’s Photos

A very happy girl is learning to read at my hometown Old Home Day celebration.

I have to share the wonderful moment. At the 2023 Old Home Day celebration in my hometown, I witnessed an argument between a father and his child. She wanted a gift bag from one of the other vendors and he, apparently, let her know that if she would read the sign above the collection of gift bags he would buy one for her. When the time came she refused and would not even try. Her father kept his word and did not grant her request. Following this was a further argument and tears. My heart broke for this pair.

Later when they were walking past my booth I asked her why she didn’t like to read. This started a conversation where I helped her sound out the title of my first children’s book, Eddie Was Hungry. I was planning on gifting the book to her, with her father’s permission, but before I could say so, her father handed her $13 and she bought it. I personalized and autographed her copy of Eddie Was Hungry and the two walked away happily.

They returned less than an hour later, her clutching Eddie Was Hungry and smiling ear to ear. She had read the entire book and loved it. Even now, remembering her smile brings tears of joy to me and I am sharing the photo they allowed me to take.

Thank you, wonderful child, for giving my book a try. I hope it brings years of enjoyment and begins a lifetime of reading for you.
